Interview with Carla Laureano
Today we have the pleasure of interviewing Carla Laureano. Carla is the wife to a martial arts master and mom to two boys. Her first novel, Five Days in Skye, was recently chosen as a double-finalist in the RWA’s 2014 RITA Awards. Oath of the Brotherhood marks her fantasy debut. Let’s welcome Carla! 1) Tell us a little about your books. I write both romance and speculative fiction under different variations of my name. My debut fantasy trilogy Song of Seare, beginning with Oath of the Brotherhood, takes its Celtic flavor and historical inspiration from Dark Ages Ireland. I’ve always …
Spec-Fic Subgenres: Steampunk & Cyberpunk
I read my first steampunk book just a couple months ago. (Armored Hearts, by Pauline Creeden and Melissa Turner Lee if you really want to know.) Since then, the steampunk radar in my head goes off every time I pass a book cover with gears or cool goggles on it. Today we’re digging into steampunk and cyberpunk. While they both have the word punk in them, you’ll find they’re quite different. Steampunk Steampunk has not yet figured out exactly which genre it falls under — science fiction or fantasy. I’ve seen many people placing it under both, and it really comes …

Marcher Lord Press is Rebranded with a New Name
At the recent Realm Makers conference in Philadelphia I (Steve) had the privilege to announce that Marcher Lord Press is being rebranded as Enclave Publishing. I am excited to officially reveal the new logo below (More thoughts after the picture). Notice the tip of the sword… Why the name Enclave Publishing? An enclave is essentially defined as a group of like-minded people in a place where they are surrounded by those who are not like-minded. West Berlin was an enclave during the Cold War. In Rome there is an enclave called Vatican City. Enclave Publishing is a place where authors …
Spec-Fic Subgenres: The Fantasies
Fantasy is where I feel most at home. I used to consider myself a fantasy fan, but as I dug into the genres I realized how ignorant I am. High fantasy? Low fantasy? Dark fantasy? What? High Fantasy (sometimes called Epic Fantasy) You may have been a high fantasy fan all your life and never known it. “One ring to rule them all…” If you know what that’s from (*hint* Lord of the Rings) then you’ve read or watched high fantasy (and hopefully liked it!) As with most subgenres, high fantasy is a little tough to fully break down. The definition either gets …

But when the authorities find out about her …
Interview with James L. Rubart
Today we have the pleasure of interviewing James L. Rubart, bestselling and Christy award-winning author of supernatural fiction. Here we go! 1) Everyone seems to have a “how I got published” story. What is yours? Summer of 2002 my wife says God has told her go on a fast. Says she doesn’t know why or how long it’s going to last. After the first day I ask if God has told her anything. “Nope.” At the end of the second day I ask again. “Nothing.” I ask how long she’s going to go on. “Till God speaks.” Halfway through day …
